U.K. Presents Spending Review and Infrastructure Strategy

On November 25, the Government of the United Kingdom presented its spending review and the first National Infrastructure Strategy. Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced an investment of GBP 100 billion in infrastructure in 2021/2022.

Despite recent political commitments, the National Infrastructure Strategy includes little new spending for green projects. For instance, GBP 27 billion is earmarked for carbon-intensive road-building schemes, and the strategy includes little evidence that the efforts to boost housing projects will prioritize the country’s net-zero target. Some newly announced funds will go toward green transportation, including GBP 120 million for zero-emission buses and GBP 950 million to improve the electricity grid along motorways to facilitate the installation of electric vehicle charging hubs at every motorway service area by 2023.
