The Department for Transport in England announced a second recovery package for bus and light rail operators on August 8, 2020. The GBP 256 million package supports public transport operators as they continue to cope with reduced passenger numbers and hence lower revenues compared to pre COVID-19 levels while being asked to increase service frequency to enable social distancing for commuters. The funding applies for operators outside the capital; Transport for London is seeking a more substantial bailout package.

Supporting public transport operators financially is essential for a sustainable recovery because public transport use can keep air pollution levels low and support social equity during and after the COVID-19 crisis. The continuous operation during and beyond the crisis ensures that all citizens remain able to commute to work and use public transport for private purposes while providing citizens with an alternative to the use of private motorized vehicles.
